Hello there! This is my guide to playing Super Smash Bros. 64, one of the best games of all time, ONLINE.
You will need:
Windows XP
Project64k
Kaillera P2P client
Super Smash Bros. 64 rom
A working Internet connection
Step 1:
Download the Project64k emulator from http://pj64k.emulation64.com/.
Step 2:
Unzip the folder into the desired location on your computer.
Step 3:
Download the Kaillera P2P client from http://kaillera.movsq.net/ .
Kaillera is the online server client that allows people to play games across the Internet. Its something like Garena.
Step 4:
Unzip the Kaillera P2P client zip folder and replacethe original kailleraclient.dll.
The original Kaillera client uses the server function. As there are very few people in Southeast Asia playing Super Smash Bros. 64 online, there are few servers to connect to.
This means that Singaporeans will have to connect to Japanese or US servers, which would cause incredible lag. However, using P2P means direct connection and this is much much faster.
Step 5:
Download the Super Smash Bros. 64 rom. As this is illegal, I cannot provide a link. You will need to find it on your own (:
After downloading, place it in the same folder as your Project64k.
Step 6:
Open Project64k. You will see a table with the heading "Good name", "Status" and others. As you would see, it is empty. So go to File>Choose ROM Directory and click the folder which has your Super Smash Bros. 64 rom.
You should see it "Super Smash Bros (U) [!]" appearing in the "Good name" field.
Step 7:
Double click the Super Smash Bros in the table to start the game. Following this, go to Options>Gameshark (Cheats) and check "Have all characters" and "Have Mushroom Kingdom" under the VS mode.
After this, go to File>End Emulation and you should see yourself at the starting screen with the table.
Step 8:
Now you're all set for online play! Go to File>Start Netplay to enter the Kaillera client. Next, choose you or your opponent to host the game.
Step 9:
To host a game, click the "Host" tab. Select "Super Smash Bros. (U) [!]" and click "Host" at the bottom right corner of the window. You should see a "Connection window" open. This is your "server".
Step 10:
Click "whatismyip" at the bottom right corner of the window. Paste this to your friend via SMS/MSN. If you are the joiner (not the hoster), go to "Connect" tab. From here, you should see a small button called "Add"
somewhere at the left. Click it. You will see 2 fields, Name and IP. Type in your friend's name and his IP address as seen from clicking the "whatismyip" button. Then double click the stored name and the IP should appear in the "Peer IP" field. Click connect.
Step 11:
Now both players should see each other in the room. You can try typing some messages to say hi(: You can also check your connection by viewing the "Ping" value at the bottom left corner of the window. The smaller the value, the closer the 2 players and faster the speed. To start the game, both players need to press the "Click here when ready" box.
Step 12:
Start playing!
